about

I was fortunate enough to know and work with one of the best guitarists in this corner of the state, John McElhinney. We were in a 3-piece called 'The Stone Crick Band' for a little over a year. John was a very private person, more given to clowning around than being angsty, but one night, he told me about his then-girlfriend and how he was afraid of losing her. His story really got into my head--the next day I sat down to my piano and wrote this song.

When it came time to cut the track, I either rented or Chuck borrowed a keyboard to use at Sound Cellar and I spent upwards of an hour trying to get the piano track right while Von and Chuck waited patiently. I finally gave up on it and recorded the basic rhythm part on guitar instead, even though I rather loathed the way the whole thing felt. It's no small satisfaction to have a new arrangement and recording that has the piano track as it was always supposed to be. That new recording is available further down the list, for your auditory delight.

lyrics

Do you remember the night that we both cried,
When we thought our love was coming to an end?
I feel so helpless, so lost and terrified,
I'm afraid it might be happening again.

Don't walk away; don't leave; don't turn your back on me.
I don't want to let you go.
Don't walk away; don't leave; don't turn your back on me.
You're the one who made love grow.
I need you so.

I see your suitcase standing by the door
And I feel a chill wind blowing through my heart.
You say you're sorry, you can't take it any more
And you feel the time has come for us to part.

Don't walk away; don't leave; don't turn your back on me.
I don't want to let you go.
Don't walk away; don't leave; don't turn your back on me.
You're the one who made love grow.
I need you so.

Without you by my side--how will I ever face the dawn?
If all that's left me is my pride--how will I ever carry on?

Don't walk away; don't leave; don't turn your back on me.
I don't want to let you go.
Don't walk away; don't leave; don't turn your back on me.
You're the one who made love grow.
I need you so.

about

Pete Grubbs Brookville, Pennsylvania

I started performing music when I was 6, turned pro at 20ish & spent well over 30 years tracking down as many gigs a month as possible. While those days are behind me, I'm still making calculated noise. My music lives where rock, classical, folk, blues & parody hang out. Oddly enough, one of their favorite haunts appears to be in collections of my songs--you'll find a bit of each on every track. ... more
