An old cowpoke went ridin' out one dismal afternoon; He'd spent the mornin' drinkin' in his favorite saloon; When all at once a mangy pack of spectral curs he saw, Yappin' down the dusty trail and up a cloudy draw. Their tongues were hangin' out a mile as they pattered on their way; Their little feet went scrapin' on the gravel and the clay. Ferocious little monsters sending terror through the sky, The lifted up their heads as one and gave their fearsome cry. (Chorus) Yip, yip, yip, yap Yap, yap, yap, yiiii, Ghost Dachshunds in the Sky They all wore crocheted sweaters and their beady eyes were red; Their yipping and their yapping were enough to wake the dead. They chewed up all the furniture that fell across their road; Dug up all the potted plants and barfed beside the stove. The havoc that these dachsies raised was such an awesome sight, The old cowpoke stood drooling and he peed himself in fright. And following behind them was a single lonely man, Armed with just a pooper-scoop, he cried out as he ran. (Chorus) He paused beside the cowpoke as he wiped his sweating brow. 'I'd love to stay and chat,' he said, 'but I don't have time right now.' 'But buddy quit your drinking or you'll end up just like me, Shoveling this ghostly poop for all Eternity.' The old cowpoke went back to town to have another drink. He told his tale and asked his friends exactly what to think. 'Get out of here you stinkin' drunk!' was all that they replied. They slammed the door upon his face and heard his mournful cry.' (Chorus)

Well I don't drink no whiskey baby, because it burns my throat like a fire. No I don't drink no whiskey baby, because it burns my throat like a fire. It reminds me of you, the way you fill me with desire. Now I don't smoke no dope baby, because it surely messes with my head. No I don't smoke no dope baby, 'cause it surely messes with my head. If I want to get high, baby, I'd rather have your sweet lovin' instead. Now I don't drive no fast cars baby, 'cause I am surely afraid to die. No I don't drive no fast cars baby, 'cause I am surely afraid to die. If I want thrill my heart, I just look in your pretty eyes. Now I don't chase other women baby, 'cause I'm not the fool I appear to be. No I don't chase other women baby, 'cause I am not the fool I appear to be. I got all that I can handle whenever you are here with me. Now I don't hog the covers baby, because I want you in my bed. No I don't hog the covers baby, because I want you in my bed. And if I can't have your sweet lovin' for all my own, Then I'd surely be better off dead.

Sail Away 03:01
Have you ever seen the sunrise on the ocean When the red flames seem to dance upon the waves? Have you ever heard a seabird cry at dawning? That's a sound that can haunt you all your days. I've been on land a little bit too long; My heart keeps telling me it's time to sail away. I've had a passion for the ocean for a lifetime And I've sung her all my songs down through the years. I'm just a landlocked lover looking for a lifeline, But I can taste her gentle kisses in my tears. I've been on land a little bit too long; My heart keeps telling me it's time to sail away. Have you ever sailed alone out on the water When the stars are hangin' high above your face? Have you heard the murmur of celestial currents And felt your spirit wander out in space? I've been on land a little bit too long; My heart keeps telling me it's time to sail away.

Yuppie Blues 02:30
I've had a very trying day today. Corporate meetings and board rooms, I've just been slavin' away. But through it all I could remain, Confident, dry and secure. I don't know how I got through the week Before I discovered Shure! And that's why it's so hard bein' a yuppie. I've got to meet Buffy's mummy and daddy tonight. It's got to be a perfect evening; everything's got to be right. I'd like to wear black, but I don't want to show too many flakes. You only get one chance to make a good first impression, And I don't wanna make no mistakes. And that's why it's so hard bein' a yuppie. My car's got 12,000 miles on, I think it's time for something new. Maybe a Porsche or an Audi or a B-M-W. I figure I should be able to make myself a pretty good trade. I hope I don't have to buy something that's American made. And that's why it's so hard bein' a yuppie.

I wait for dawn; the night is growing old. I never knew a heart could be so cold. And you stand there, Wrapped in your disguise, Hiding all the ice in your eyes. I thought I'd found my one true love at last And turned away from the spectre of my past. But all I'd found beneath the layers of your lies, Were the caverns in the ice in your eyes. I wander on, lost and all alone, Searching for a path to lead me home. But with the dawn I finally realize That I'm trapped within the ice in your eyes.

Somewhere there's an ocean no one's ever seen; Sapphire sky above her and water emerald green; Steady breeze blowin' from the east into the west And on her shores a wounded heart Can always find a quiet place to rest. Somewhere there's a ladder that climbs up to the sky; High above these heartaches, I'll watch the clouds roll by. I know I won't stop climbin' until I touch the stars; Until I'm finally high enough That it really doesn't matter where you are. And somewhere there's a woman, whose love is always bright; Whose arms are always ready to hold you through the night. I once thought that I saw her when I looked into your eyes, But it was only an illusion, Just another one of your parti-colored lies. But somewhere there's an ocean no one's ever seen; Sapphire sky above her and water emerald green; I know that I can find her; her voice is very clear. She's calling to my broken heart, Telling me, softly telling me she's near. Somewhere there's an ocean (she's near) Somewhere there's an ocean . . .

about

There were 12 tracks on the original release of This Space for Rent; 4 of them SUCKED so badly, I can't listen to them any more. The other one was somewhere between better and worse. The rest of the album, which has been out of print for years, was not so bad. I thought it worth putting here. enjoy!

about

Pete Grubbs Brookville, Pennsylvania

I started performing music when I was 6, turned pro at 20ish & spent well over 30 years tracking down as many gigs a month as possible. While those days are behind me, I'm still making calculated noise. My music lives where rock, classical, folk, blues & parody hang out. Oddly enough, one of their favorite haunts appears to be in collections of my songs--you'll find a bit of each on every track. ... more
